The Harvard Graduate School of Education Alumni Council welcomes nominations for the Alumni Council Awards. The awards, begun in 1985 to recognize significant service to education by HGSE alumni, honor candidates from across education sectors (including schools, districts, nonprofits, technology, academia, or research). Nominees must be graduates of HGSE and have made a noteworthy contribution to education during their professional careers.
Each spring, all HGSE alumni as well as current HGSE faculty and staff are eligible to submit nominations. Self-nominations, nominations from spouses, or nominations from someone else you are also nominating in the same awards cycle will not be considered. Awardees will be presented with the award at the Convocation ceremony in May.
Please note, current Harvard University faculty, staff, students, HGSE Alumni Council members, and previous recipients are not eligible to receive an Alumni Council award.
In 2023, the HGSE Alumni Council introduced a second award focused on Impact in Education. This award is intended to complement the Outstanding Contribution to Education award that has been granted for the past 36 years, which was renamed to the Excellence in Education award in 2023. We continue to honor and recognize past awardees with deep appreciation for their ongoing contributions to the education field.
This award is given to alumni who demonstrate significant, long-term service in the field of education; far-reaching impact in their work; consistent track record of continued dedication to education-focused issues; years of professional experience in the academy and/or practice or policy; and overall contribution made to the field of education. The work must have improved education in significant ways and represent the mission and values of the Harvard Graduate School of Education: To learn to change the world through education by having an impact on equity and opportunity and by empowering all learners.
This award is given to an individual alumnus or alumna, a team of alumni, or a team led by an alumnus or alumna who has successfully created and/or implemented work that has demonstrably impacted the field and communities while bringing hope to the state of education at the local, national, or global levels. The work must have improved educational success, at the local, systems, or policy levels, in significant ways while representing the mission and values of the Harvard Graduate School of Education: To learn to change the world through engagement in research, education, and action by having an impact on equity and opportunity and empowering all learners.
