Syllabus: Tony Jack

Open 3-ring binder

In this new occasional feature, we’ll look at the syllabus for a current class at the Ed School and ask the professor to share some of the books they are having their students read. Up first: Assistant Professor Tony Jack’s spring course, A705: C.R.E.A.M.: Class and Culture at U.S. Colleges and Universities. Selected books from the syllabus include:

  • Paying for the Party: How College Maintains Inequality by Elizabeth Armstrong and Laura Hamilton (Harvard University Press)
  • Lower Ed: The Troubling Rise of For-profit Colleges in the New Economy by Tressie McMillan Cottom (The New Press)
  • Paying the Price: College Costs, Financial Aid, and the Betrayal of the American Dream by Sara Goldrick-Rab (University of Chicago Press)
  • The Privileged Poor: How Elite Colleges Are Failing Disadvantaged Students by Anthony Jack (Harvard University Press)
  • Racism in America: A Reader (free, from the Harvard University Press website)

The class also created a shared Spotify list that includes songs connected to the themes of home, mobility, and education. Songs on the playlist included Mama Said by the Shirelles, Coat of Many Colors by Dolly Parton, and Crown by CHIKA.
