Josh Butts, Ed.M.’08, has joined HGSE as its new senior associate dean for development and alumni relations. He officially began in the position this summer.

“The opportunity to serve HGSE under Dean Long’s leadership is a privilege, and one that I assume with great enthusiasm,” says Butts. “Returning to HGSE is a homecoming for me, and I look forward to engaging our alumni and friends in support of the important work being done to improve education for all.”

Butts returns to Harvard after three years at University of Chicago Medicine where he served as assistant vice president of principal gifts, leading principal gifts strategy for the Medicine and Biological Sciences development office. As a member of the executive leadership team, he set strategies for an office of over 60 development staff in pursuit of a $1.2B campaign goal. Prior to that, Butts was principal and major gifts fundraiser at Harvard Medical School, where he secured multi-million dollar gifts for strategic priorities in global health. Butts has also served as assistant to the dean of Arts and Sciences at Tufts University and assistant director in the Office of Annual Giving at the University of Chicago Law School.

Butts received his Ed.M. in 2008 from HGSE, where he was enrolled in the Higher Education Program. He received his B.A. in 2001 from Illinois Wesleyan University.
