Long Named Chair of NBES

Bridget Terry LongProfessor Bridget Terry Long was recently named chair of the National Board for Education Sciences (NBES).

“I feel honored to serve as chair of the National Board for Education Sciences (NBES),” she said. “As the daughter of a teacher, I take special pride in leading this group of distinguished educational experts and practitioners. In our current environment, educational research has become even more important as we work to raise student achievement while also having to make tough decisions about how to use our limited funds. The NBES has a vital role to play in emphasizing the role of evidence and supporting the development of new research.”

Long, who was appointed to the board in 2010, will officially begin her tenure on November 28. “I also very much look forward to working with John Easton, the director of the Institute for Education Sciences (IES), as we consider ways to continually improve the research arm of the U.S. Department of Education,” Long said.

Long, who was appointed to the board in 2010, will join fellow HGSE faculty members Professor Judith Singer and Professor Hiro Yoshikawa, both of whom the president recently announced his intent to nominate for the board.

The National Board of Education Sciences is a 15-member presidentially appointed advisory panel of the Institute of Education Sciences in the U.S. Department of Education. The board performs a host of duties, ranging from reviewing and approving the research priorities of the Institute to advising and consulting with the director on the policies of the Institute. The board also reviews and regularly evaluates the work of the Institute to ensure that its research, development, evaluation and statistical analyses are consistent with the standards set out in the Education Sciences Reform Act of 2002.
