Long Named to Research Advisory Board

HGSE Associate Professor Bridget Terry Long has been named a research advisory committee member to the Lumina Foundation for Education.

The Lumina Foundation, an Indianapolis-based, private, independent foundation, strives to help people achieve their potential by expanding access and success in education beyond high school.

"I am extremely honored and pleased to be asked to serve on the advisory committee," Long said. "The Lumina Foundation has become a leader in the support of work on issues related to college access, and I hope I can help them as they consider ways to do even more."

Long will be one of 12 national higher education experts on the advisory group and will help to inform the Foundation's research agenda, identify established and emerging researchers, and disseminate the findings to policymakers and practitioners in the field. Each member will serve a two-year term.

"We are honored that each of these individuals is willing to commit personal time and energy to benefit students by improving today's higher education system," said Martha D. Lamkin, president and CEO of Lumina. "Together we will identify and pursue research that answers key questions about higher education access and success for policymakers, practitioners, parents, students and education leaders."

Through grants for research, innovation, communication, and evaluation, as well as policy education and leadership development, Lumina Foundation addresses issues that affect access and educational attainment among all students, particularly underserved student groups, including adult learners. The Foundation bases its mission on the belief that postsecondary education remains one of the most beneficial investments that individuals can make in themselves and that society can make in its people.

Long's work applies the theory and methods of economics to examine various aspects of the market for higher education in the United States. Her research focuses on access and choice in higher education, the outcomes of college students, and the behavior of postsecondary institutions.
