The President-in-Residence Program

PIRs Brian Rosenberg and Mary Marcy meet with the higher education cohort

2021–22 Presidents-in-Residence Mary Marcy (bottom, third from left) and Brian Rosenberg (middle, third from left) meet with the Higher Education cohort in fall 2021

The President‐in‐Residence Program was launched at the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2001 by Professor Judith Block McLaughlin as a way to anchor academic discussions in higher education with real‐world experience. The program brings distinguished former college or university presidents to HGSE to attend classes alongside students, meet with students in one‐on‐one office hours, and advise students on important academic and career decisions. Presidents-in-Residence join our master’s students in the residential higher education concentration and in the online higher education pathway for discussions about and reflections on leadership in higher education and the contemporary challenges in the field.

The program welcomes Biddy Martin and Javier Cevallos as Presidents‐in‐Residence for the 2022–23 academic year.

Among her many accomplishments as the 19th president of Amherst College, Biddy Martin implemented sweeping financial aid initiatives and an ambitious, achievable Climate Action Plan; significantly increased student and faculty diversity; developed an anti-racism plan; spearheaded an important set of capital projects; modernized the administrative function of the college; and increased the stature of humanities research and education.

With a deep and long history at public institutions of higher education, Javier Cevallos has worked to bring a global perspective to campus, most recently at Framingham State University where he created partnerships with universities in Ecuador, Costa Rica, and Brazil. Throughout his career, he has worked to increase enrollment, diversity, and school selectivity while nimbly aligning resources with school mission.
