Broadening the Conversation

This month, Usable Knowledge broadens its offerings by introducing a dynamic series of interactive webinars with faculty from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. The series invites participants to dive into critical topics in education and interact with Harvard's innovative thinkers — senior leaders in education research, policy, and practice.

Usable Knowledge Webinars kicks off on June 24 with Learning to Talk by Talking, which will explore how children learn to talk (and how adults can help); the importance of stimulating talk and of answering children’s questions; and the power of discussion and debate to promote literacy in middle and high school students. Professor Catherine Snow, a pioneer in the field of language and literacy development, will lead the webinar.

The next event in the series is Ensuring Success for All, on June 30, which will offer guidance and tools to educators seeking to create inclusive schools that nurture success in every student. Professor Thomas Hehir, an internationally known expert on educating students with disabilities, will lead the webinar. He’ll explore the principles of Universal Design for Learning, probe the complexity and rewards of teaching in a diverse classroom, and offer helpful practices for students and teachers. 

Usable Knowledge Webinars is the latest offering from Usable Knowledge, HGSE’s initiative to make education research and best practices accessible to the public. The webinars “are an exciting new way for educators, parents, policymakers, and those in the field to learn from the extraordinary expertise of our faculty,” says HGSE Dean James Ryan. Through these “interactive and engaging sessions,” he continues, “participants will not only gain deeper understanding, but also will take away useful ideas and practical solutions. I am delighted that we are able to enrich our Usable Knowledge offerings through this webinar series to ensure that research findings and best practices are translated into action.”

Each 90-minute webinar will start with a faculty talk and include periods of interaction and Q&A. Like the content on the Usable Knowledge website, the webinars aim to offer practical tools and strategies, as well as to highlight solutions — emerging opportunities for leadership and new ways of thinking about enduring challenges.

Each Usable Knowledge webinar is open to all audiences. The webinars are especially well suited for K–12 educators, including teachers, principals, superintendents and other district leaders, and members of partner organizations. They will also be of interest to parents.
