Dean Bridget Terry Long and Professor Heather Hill have been elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences (AAAS), it was announced. The AAAS — which works across disciplines to advance the common good — has been honoring members whose work demonstrates excellence and leadership since 1781.

“I feel so honored to have been elected,” said Long. “The American Academy of Arts & Sciences is among the most revered honorary societies, and I look forward to working with members of this distinguished group to address challenges facing our world today.”

Echoed Hill: "I am surprised and delighted; it is an honor to be recognized among such an accomplished group of scholars, artists, writers, and leaders. I look forward to joining AAAS members in advancing the common good.”

This year’s 250 new members represent 31 areas of expertise, including psychology, economics, science, and the arts. Long and Hill are among the 10 inductees from the field of education.

“With the broad diversity of members elected this year, we are continuing to expand on the commitment to excellence and wide-ranging expertise established by our founders,” said Chair of the Board of Directors Goodwin Liu, associate justice of the California Supreme Court. “The honor of election comes with an invitation for new members to rededicate themselves to the common good by advancing the academy’s nonpartisan, cross-disciplinary work in the arts, democracy, education, global affairs, and science.”

In addition to her higher education leadership, Long is an economist who studies the transition from high school to higher education and beyond, including the impact of factors such as affordability and academic preparation on college persistence and student outcomes.

Hill, co-director of the Teaching and Teacher Leadership Program at HGSE, studies policies and programs designed to improve teacher and teaching quality, such as professional development; instructional coaching; teacher evaluation; and the teacher experiences and characteristics that lead to high-quality instruction and stronger student outcomes.

Hill and Long join HGSE faculty members Danielle Allen, Susan Dynarski, Catherine Elgin, Howard Gardner, Paul Harris, Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot, Richard Light, and Catherine Snow among AAAS's membership.
