McCoy, Miratrix Named Associate Professor

Part of the HGSE faculty since 2015, Dana Charles McCoy and Luke Miratrix were recently promoted to the rank of associate professor.

Dean Bridget Long has announced that Dana Charles McCoy and Luke Miratrix have both been promoted to the rank of associate professor. McCoy and Miratrix join Eric Taylor, whose promotion to associate professor was announced in August.

“I am thrilled to recognize the outstanding achievements of Dana McCoy and Luke Miratrix with these well-deserved promotions," says Long. "Dana’s work advances our understanding of the impact of poverty on early childhood, in both the U.S. and international contexts.  Likewise, Luke’s scholarship has promoted a deeper understanding of research methodology and the quantitative evaluation of education interventions. Aside from their scholarly pursuits, they have both left an indelible mark on our community with their commitment to educating and mentoring our students. Dana and Luke are each poised to further their incredible impact on our community and on their respective fields.”

McCoy's research explores the ways in which poverty-related risk factors affect the development of children's cognitive and socioemotional skills in early childhood. She also studies early intervention programs designed to promote positive development and resilience in young children, particularly in terms of their self-regulation and executive function. Conducting work in the United States and internationally, McCoy has been published in Developmental Psychology, Child Development, Pediatrics, and The Lancet, and has presented her research before the WHO, UNICEF, and the World Bank.

Miratrix is a statistician who explores how best to use modern statistical methods in applied social science contexts, particularly in education research. He directs the Miratrix C.A.R.E.S. lab, a group dedicated to high-quality causal inference research in the social sciences, as well as to developing transparent approaches to data analysis that foster engagement from diverse stakeholders. In 2019, he was awarded both the Warren Miller Prize by the Society of Political Methodology and the Society for Research on Educational Effectiveness Early Career Award.

Both McCoy and Miratrix joined the HGSE faculty in 2015.
