News McCartney Appoints New Faculty Members Posted May 31, 2011 By News editor Dean Kathleen McCartney has made three new faculty appointments to the Harvard Graduate School of Education.Felipe Barrera-Osorio will join the faculty in August as an assistant professor. Barrera-Osorio is currently a senior economist in the Human Development Network Education group at the World Bank, and is known for working closely with governments in Pakistan and Colombia to evaluate policies and programs to improve student learning outcomes. At HGSE, Barrera-Osorio will teach and advise students with international education interests at both the master’s and doctoral levels.David Deming, currently an assistant professor of economics and public policy at Carnegie Mellon University, has been appointed an assistant professor. Deming studies the economics of early childhood and K–12 education and the effects of education policy on long-term outcomes for disadvantaged urban youth. He completed his Ph.D. in public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School in 2010.Gigi Luk will join the faculty as an assistant professor. Luk is a postdoctoral fellow at the Rotman Research Institute at Baycrest in Toronto, researching the influence of life experience, specifically bilingualism, on higher cognition across the lifespan. She earned her Ph.D. in Psychology at York University in Toronto in 2008.
