Urban Scholar Shimrit Paley

Shimrit PaleyFormer first-grade teacher Shimrit Paley was drawn to HGSE's Higher Education Program because of the broad-based knowledge and flexibility it offered. "I looked forward to taking classes with professors like Bridget Terry Long, who is a leading scholar on issues of college access," she says. Thankfully, the Urban Scholar Program made this choice financially feasible as she embarks on a career in higher education. "I believe that no student should be unable to succeed in college because of their race, socioeconomic status, or zip code," she says.

How did you find out about Urban Scholars?
When I saw the program description on the online application, I immediately knew that its emphasis on urban education and education equity spoke to my interests and career ambitions. A call from [Assistant Dean for Master's Studies] Jennifer Petrallia several months later informed me that I had been selected for the scholarship.

What does it mean to you to be an Urban Scholar?
For me, being an Urban Scholar is a constant reminder of why I decided to pursue a career in higher education. It reflects and encourages my commitment to education equity at all levels within the higher education system. I hope to channel the intentions of the Urban Scholar award to improve urban, public higher education, as well as the access and retention rates for students who attend these types of institutions.

What are your thoughts on teaching in an urban school today?
Urban education is not just K-12. Rather the failings of the K-12 system plague higher education, and vice versa. As a result, I believe that education should be viewed as a K-16 system, with all educators and administrators tackling the challenges of improving America's education system together. A college degree is more important than ever, so a student's race, socioeconomic status, or K-12 school district should not be a barrier to obtaining a college education.

What do you plan to do after HGSE?
I plan to enter the field of academic advising and work to enable all students to succeed and flourish in any college environment.
