News Urban Scholar Joseph McIntyre Posted January 20, 2010 By Jill Anderson For Joseph McIntyre, the answer to why he chose a career in education is simple: "I love kids and I love teaching," he says. As a former high school math teacher in Mongolia, Maine native McIntyre is excited to be close to home and also able to take advantage of the students and faculty at HGSE. He's equally excited to be an Urban Scholar. What are your thoughts on teaching in an urban school today?Urban schools have wonderful opportunities that they can take advantage of. They're close to cultural and artistic centers, to universities, and to numerous professionals in every different field; I think it would be good for schools to take advantage of the resources. What would you change about education today?I do think there's a need for a re-evaluation of our goals. As important as academic skills and critical thinking are, we need to prioritize other goals as well, such as moral reasoning and behavior, social skills, and active citizenship. What do you plan to do after HGSE?In the short term I'm looking for a position in Kazakhstan so that my wife and I can be closer to her family and our daughter can learn Kazakh. After that I want to apply to a doctoral program to do research in moral growth and education.
