McLaughlin Named Chair of Public Education Nominating Council

Governor Deval Patrick recently named Lecturer Judith McLaughlin chair of the Public Education Nominating Council.

“I was honored and delighted to have this chance to work with public higher education,” says McLaughlin, who directs the Higher Education Program at the Ed School. “This is an exciting opportunity and represents my long-standing commitment to Massachusetts higher education.”

As chair, McLaughlin will oversee a 12–15 member council responsible for selecting members for college boards of trustees in the state and making recommendations for the state board of higher education.

Previously, McLaughlin was a trustee for 10 years at Bridgewater State College (Mass.) and foresees this position as a way to continue her work.

“This is a chance to work with the public sector institutions in this state,” she says. “I’m someone who believes strongly in a vibrant higher education system and this is an opportunity to contribute to that.”

Among McLaughlin’s goals is a commitment to “working as partners with colleges and universities to identify individuals who can serve as talented trustees and to think with colleges and universities about how to strengthen boards,” she says.
