News HGSE Raises Money for Local Day Care Posted January 17, 2007 By News editor HGSE faculty and staff raised more than $2,500 for the Our Place Day Care Center in Cambridge at their annual holiday party in December. On Tuesday, Jan. 9, Senior Finance Officer Juan Carlos Hincapie and Events Manager Shawn Tuttle personally delivered the donation check to the center.Our Place, a Salvation Army facility, focuses specifically on helping families break the pattern of homelessness by providing day care, educational services, and emotional support. The nationally-accredited day care center serves 38 children every day.During their recent visit, Hincapie and Tuttle toured the Central Square facility and met with the children and caregivers.Giving to Our Place has become a tradition at HGSE. Now in its sixth year, the annual fundraising effort highlights the school’s commitment to early childhood education and helping local children get a head start in the classroom.“Creating a safe, free preschool and educational environment for homeless families is a vital ingredient to breaking the cycle of homelessness,” said Bob Fogel, HGSE dean of administration. “We are honored to play a part in this critical work. Hopefully our donation can lead to additional opportunities for the children at Our Place.”Our Place’s director Bessie Wilkerson was extremely thankful for the donation. “It will make a difference and can always help the day care to move forward.”The center will use the donation in order to purchase much needed furniture and supplies.
