Askwith Essentials: What Makes A Good Citizen?

Donald Trump is the president-elect of the United States. While civics education policy was not a factor in this year’s presidential election, United States Secretary of Education John King recently urged educators to “make preparing your students for their civic duties just as much a priority as preparing them to succeed in college and in their careers.”

Although neither candidate’s K-12 education platforms mentioned civics education, Hillary Clinton had taken citizenship into account, proposing executive commitments to promoting service, including a threefold increase in the number of Americorps service members.

In the aftermath of this year’s election, and in conjunction with the 42nd annual Association for Moral Education Conference, Askwith Forums will host a panel of moral education thinkers to discuss the historic outcome of the 2016 election, its relationship to civics education, and key challenges for the civic education landscape going forward.
