The American Educational Research Association (AERA) has announced that Daniel Koretz has won the 2022 E.F. Lindquist Award for his body of research. The honor, presented jointly by AERA and ACT in recognition of outstanding applied or theoretical research in the field of testing and measurement, was announced on April 8, as part of AERA's slate of 2022 awards for excellence in education research.

"I’m greatly honored to receive the 2022 E. F. Lindquist award," says Koretz. "Much of my work has focused on a major problem in education policy that Lindquist predicted: the inappropriate test prep and score inflation that can arise when tests are used for accountability. I’m grateful to have this work recognized by my colleagues."

Koretz is an expert on educational assessment and testing policy with a focus on the impact of high-stakes testing. Over the course of his career, he has studied score inflation, the effects of testing programs on educational practice, the assessment of students with disabilities, international differences in the variability of student achievement, the application of value-added models to educational achievement, and the development of methods for validating scores under high-stakes conditions. His most recent work focuses on the equity implications of high-stakes testing, the effects of high-stakes testing on postsecondary outcomes, the characteristics of traditional tests that encourage inappropriate test preparation, and the design and evaluation of new testing designs tailored for accountability. In 2017, he published The Testing Charade: Pretending to Make Schools Better, a book that details the numerous issues around test-based accountability in American education.

"We are excited to honor these exemplary individuals for their outstanding achievements in advancing education research," said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine about 2022's award recipients, including Koretz. "Their cutting-edge scholarship and tireless support of the education research field are making a difference in the lives of students, educators, and others."

AERA will honor the recipients at an awards ceremony at the 2022 Annual Meeting on Sunday, April 24, in San Diego.
