Fall 2012 Askwith Forums Announced

The Harvard Graduate School of Education is pleased to announce its fall 2012 Askwith Forums, a series of public lectures dedicated to discussing challenges facing education, sharing new knowledge, and generating spirited conversation. Highlights this fall will include former New York City School Chancellor Joel Klein, Harvard Medical School Professor Atul Gawande, and Uncommon Schools Managing Director Doug Lemov.

The Askwith Forums, which are free and open to the public, attract more than 3,500 attendees each year. The series provides an opportunity for practitioners, policymakers, and researchers to share their work, talk with one another, and advance proven practices that will improve learning opportunities for all children.

The complete fall schedule of events follows:

September 27: Educational Sovereignty and the Santa Fe Indian School with Leadership Institute and Summer Policy Academy at the Santa Fe Indian School Cofounder and Codirector Carnell Chosa, Leadership Institute and Summer Policy Academy at the Santa Fe Indian School Cofounder and Codirector Regis Pecos, and Santa Fe Indian School Director of Planning and Evaluation Patricia S. Sandoval. 5:30 – 7 p.m.

October 1: Joel Klein: Educational Innovations for the Future with the former chancellor of the New York City Department of Education. 5:30 – 7 p.m.

October 15: Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin with Harvard Law School Professors Lani Guinier and Tomiko Brown-Nagin. 5:30 – 7 p.m.

October 18: Powering Social Change with Data: A Bully Case Study with DoSomething.org CEO Nancy Lublin and Data Analyst Jeff Bladt. 5:30 – 7 p.m.

October 24: Atul Gawande: The Difference Between Coaching and Teaching with Atul Gawande, professor of surgery, Harvard Medical School; professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management, Harvard School of Public Health; and staff writer, The New Yorker. 5:30 – 7 p.m.

November 15:  Doug Lemov: Teach Like a Champion with Doug Lemov, managing director at Uncommon Schools and author of Teach Like a Champion  and Practice Perfect.5:30 – 7 p.m.

All forums are held in Askwith Hall in the Longfellow building on Appian Way in Cambridge, Mass., and are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. The Askwith Forums, established in 1998 by an anonymous donor and named in memory of New York City public-relations consultant, writer and publishing executive Herbert Askwith, is a series of public lectures at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Over the past few years, the Askwith Forums have featured a wide range of topics, including early childhood, civic and moral engagement, bullying, expanded learning models, educating for human rights, and international education. Topics are initiated by faculty, students, and alumni, and aim to address the highest-priority challenges facing the education sector.

Prominent speakers have included former U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, New York Times journalist David Brooks, former U.S. Secretary of Defense Colin Powell, American Federation of Teacher’s President Randi Weingarten, pop singer Lady Gaga, media mogul Oprah Winfrey, and authors Eric Carle and Diane Ravitch.
