Liao Cheng is a third-year Ph.D. student in the Human Development, Learning and Teaching concentration. Her research focuses on childrens innovative tool use. Specifically, she is interested in the potentially dialectical relationship between knowledge and innovation. While mastering knowledge is a prerequisite of innovation, taking knowledge for granted or having a rigid representation of knowledge may restrict ones view to what is known and block innovation. She has also been working on applying Zen to the study of psychology and education. Her work on this line was published in her book There is something on your mind: A thorough analysis of Zen koans (2014).
