One in a Billion

In launching her media startup, China Personified, international television journalist Mable Chan wanted to shine a light on the personal stories that make up her home country.

"Storytelling is the most powerful vehicle that anyone can use," says Chan.

Now, more than just a media company, China Personified is a "social enterprise" that through sharing people's stories — in first-person blogs, podcasts, video profiles, and more — paints a vivid picture of China, building a greater understanding of the country's people and culture.

"I think most people don't think about their own lives as a story. Once they do, and start to reflect on the reasons for their actions and reactions, it is extremely educational," says Chan, at HGSE to participate in the Why Not Me? storytelling event. "What's more educational than listening to your own voice describing how you look at the world?"

In this edition of the Harvard EdCast, guest host Iman Rastegari speaks to Chan about her new podcast, "One in a Billion," and the educational power of storytelling.
