Gardner Hosts J-Term Lecture Series

As part of J-Term at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Professor Howard Gardner will be hosting a lecture series on campus.

Trained as a developmental-, cognitive-, and neuropsychologist, Gardner has been at Harvard for more than 50 years, with Project Zero for 45 years, and a professor at HGSE since 1986.

In this unprecedented series of three lectures, Gardner traces the development of his
ideas in education.

Monday, January 14, 5:30-7 p.m.
Multiple Intelligences: The Theory, Its Applications In the first lecture, Gardner describes the background that led to his development, 30 years ago, of the theory of multiple intelligences. He outlines the major claims of the theory, the ways that it has evolved over the years, the principal misunderstandings, and the applications that he most admires.

Tuesday, January 15, 5:30-7 p.m.
Educating for Understanding within and across the Disciplines In the second lecture, Gardner describes the kind of education that he most values: an education that is grounded in the disciplines and that leads to deep understanding. He also discusses the nature, power, and perils of interdisciplinary education. In conclusion, he touches on the theme of his most recent book, Truth, Beauty, and Goodness Reframed, in
which he rethinks a “disciplinary education” in the digital age.

Thursday, January 17, 5:30-7 p.m.
Five Minds for the Future In the third lecture — wearing the “hat” of the policy maker, rather than that of the psychologist — Gardner describes the five kinds of minds most necessary for surviving and thriving in the 21st century: Three of these minds are cognitive — disciplined, synthesizing, creating. Two of these minds entail human relations — respectful and ethical. As in
the second lecture, Gardner discusses how these minds can be nurtured in a digital era.

All lectures will be held in Askwith Auditorium, Longfellow Hall, Harvard Graduate School of Education. Overflow seating will be available.
