Louie Named Visiting Scholar at the Russell Sage Foundation

Assistant Professor Vivian Louie was recently appointed as a visiting scholar at the Russell Sage Foundation. The foundation, based in New York City, is devoted to research in the social sciences and publishes books based on the work of its grantees and visiting scholars.

“I am honored to have this remarkable opportunity to be a visiting scholar at the Russell Sage Foundation this year,” Louie said.

Louie is one of 21 leading social scientists appointed as visiting scholars for the 2007–2008 academic year. During the year, the scholars pursue research and writing projects that reflect the foundation’s commitment to strengthening the social sciences and applying research more effectively to important social problems.

As a result of her appointment, Louie said she will write a book about how second-generation Dominicans and Colombians experience migration and the transition from high school to college, and the extent to which they view the transition to higher education as becoming part of the American mainstream.

“I expect that my work will benefit from the residency in at least two ways. First, I will have the chance to learn from a vibrant interdisciplinary community of thinkers of diverse interests. Second, I will benefit from the foundation’s focused interest in immigration,” Louie said. “The Russell Sage Foundation has funded and published groundbreaking studies in the field of immigration, and through its Immigration Program, continues to pursue important investigations of the long term prospects for the country’s new arrivals and their descendants. I look forward to learning from my esteemed colleagues at the foundation this year.”
