Posted April 20, 2017 By News editor Livestreaming of this talk will begin May 18 at 11:15 a.m.About the TalkMichael McAfee, president of PolicyLink, has led the effort to make President Obama’s Promise Neighborhoods initiative a reality in communities across the U.S. Please join the Education Redesign Lab (ERL) and cities participating in ERL’s By All Means initiative for McAfee’s keynote speech on May 18, 2017 at 11:15 a.m. His talk, entitled "Equity and Collective Impact in Systems Change," will focus on the work of the Promise Neighborhood Institute to build stronger systems of educational support and opportunity for children.Inspired by the successful Harlem Children’s Zone model, the Promise Neighborhoods Institute at PolicyLink supports Promise Neighborhoods — communities of opportunity centered around strong schools — to wrap children in education, health, and social supports from cradle to career. President Obama launched the Promise Neighborhoods in 2010 and now over 50 communities are planning or implementing results-focused data-driven Promise Neighborhoods, scaling up to serve 200,000 children nationwide.About By All MeansThe By All Means initiative is addressing the iron law correlation between socioeconomic status and education outcomes by partnering with visionary mayors and superintendents from Louisville, Kentucky; Oakland, California; Providence, Rhode Island; and Salem, Somerville, and Newton, Massachusetts. Each city has created a Children’s Cabinet — a cross-sector team made up of mayors, superintendents, health and human services directors, and community and civic leaders — to embark on a redesign process that is focused on creating integrated systems of opportunity and support from early childhood through to higher education.To accelerate this work, the Education Redesign Lab hosts the cabinets for five 2-day retreats over 2.5 years, bringing leaders to Cambridge to learn from national experts, Harvard faculty, and each other.
