Education Redesign: Building 21st Century Systems of Child Development and Education

Overview

How can we better prepare all children to succeed in education and in life, especially those affected by poverty? What type of system of supports and opportunities do we need? Is our system of education capable of delivering on the promise of educating all students at high levels? How can our systems of child development and education be redesigned to meet the challenges of the 21st century? How can we work across sectors to build and sustain this system over time?

Building 21st Century Systems of Child Development and Education is an online professional development program for policymakers and civic leaders, K-12 educators, community-based providers, healthcare and social service representatives, and those committed to helping all students thrive. Based upon the research of HGSE Professor Paul Reville and his team at the Education Redesign Lab (EdRedesign), the workshop explores why current education reform efforts are failing and how we might work to design a “new engine” to drive better outcomes for all. Participants will examine current research on the persistent correlation of socioeconomic status and student outcomes, as well as EdRedesign’s efforts to build a cradle-to-career system that allows all children to succeed. These efforts include helping to develop local children’s cabinets, creating Success Plans, using data to measure impact and progress, leveraging multiple financing strategies, and driving a movement to sustain this collective work.

Program Details

This two-week online workshop includes a mix of self-paced learning, group discussion, and job-embedded application. You will have access to mini-lectures, readings, concept checks, and lectures. Activities include:

• Video lectures from Professor Reville, director of the Education Redesign Lab, in addition to presentations from other senior EdRedesign staff
• Assigned readings
• Self-assessment and reflection prompts
• Facilitated cohort discussions
• Job-embedded practice where you will apply the concepts and techniques learned

A core part of the HGSE experience is cohort learning, and this curriculum is designed to create a community of practice for participants to learn with and from each other.

This online workshop is an asynchronous learning experience with no live components and is designed to be self-paced. All materials are provided at the start of the program and can be completed at times that best fit a participant’s schedule within the two-week program period. Participants should plan to devote a total of 10 hours of work over the two weeks. Participants who complete all individual assessments and contribute to group discussions prior to the end of the course period will receive a certificate indicating completion of ten clock hours of instruction.

English Language Proficiency Requirements

English language proficiency is a requirement for application to and successful participation in this online course. All participants are expected to have fluency in English, including a basic knowledge of education terminology, in order to effectively engage with the content, complete assignments, and interact with other members of the learning community.
