HGSE Sets Virtual Commencement

Distant but still festive, HGSE will gather online — and everywhere — for a celebration of its 2020 graduates on May 28.

The coronavirus will not keep the Harvard Graduate School of Education from celebrating more than 700 students who will be awarded their degrees through a virtual commencement on Thursday, May 28.

Due to the ongoing concerns regarding COVID-19, the in-person commencement activities originally planned for Thursday, May 28, will be postponed. Dean Bridget Long acknowledged the disappointment in the delay of an in-person celebration, but assured students that an online convening will honor the Class of 2020 degrees for their efforts.

“While we anxiously await a time when we can gather and celebrate the many accomplishments of our 2020 graduates in person, I am pleased that we will join together virtually to mark this important moment,” she says. “I will remember this graduating class for their resiliency, generosity to each other, and clear focus on the needs of students, families, and schools amidst uncertain and challenging times. I look forward to celebrating their achievements and many outstanding contributions to our community.”

The virtual celebration will begin like many Harvard commencements, with an invitation from Harvard University to participate in a Virtual Conferring of Degrees. Following a short break, HGSE graduates and their families are invited to HGSE’s Virtual Commencement, to be broadcast on YouTube at 12 p.m. ET. Long will recognize award winners, and graduates will hear from this year’s student speaker.

Throughout the afternoon of May 28, HGSE will recognize all graduating students through concurrent diploma ceremonies online. While more than 700 students from 34 countries will earn their degrees, each graduate will enjoy a moment of recognition for their dedication and hard work, says Kevin Boehm, senior associate director of the office of student affairs. Each individual diploma ceremony — for each of HGSE’s doctoral, master’s, and C.A.S. programs — will be broadcast to a unique YouTube link, details of which will be provided to graduates and their families.
