States and Schools

Over the last several years, education has become more politicized than ever, says Chris Minnich, executive director of the nonprofit Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). At the Harvard Graduate School of Education this week to begin the organization's annual meeting of its members — chief officers of education from all over the United States — Minnich and the CCSSO seek to help chief and deputy officers navigate the current educational climate, including debates about Common Core Standards and questions of how, despite differences, states can come together to reach common goals.

"How do you lead through that environment?" Minnich asks. "How do you make sure you're bringing constituencies together to have these conversations?"

In this edition of the Harvard EdCast, Chris Minnich, executive director of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), reflects on the challenges facing states — and how the CCSSO can help — in the increasingly politicized field of education.
