Bridget Terry Long Named Professor of Education

Bridget Terry LongAssociate Professor Bridget Terry Long has been promoted to full professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education effective April 1, 2009. An economist with expertise in access to higher education and college student success, Long joined the Ed School as an assistant professor in 2000.

"Bridget is emblematic of faculty who truly work at the nexus of practice, policy, and research," said Dean Kathleen McCartney. "She publishes papers that probe important questions in higher education using rigorous methods, and then works to bring her findings to those who need them most -- practitioners and policymakers."

Long's work applies the theory and methods of economics to examine various aspects of the market for higher education in the United States. Her research focuses on access and choice in higher education, the outcomes of college students, and the behavior of postsecondary institutions. Her recent and ongoing projects include: "Improving Access to College Information and Financial Aid," a study on the effects of simplifying the financial aid application process; "Understanding Barriers and Examining Interventions," a series of research studies focused on college enrollment and completion for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; and  "Addressing the Problem of Insufficient High School Preparation," which focuses on state efforts to regulate college remedial programs and reforms that attempt to reduce the need for remediation.

Long is a faculty research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and the National Center of Postsecondary Research. In addition, she serves as an advisor to many boards including the Massachusetts Public Education Nominating Council, Lumina Foundation for Education, the Center for Policy Analysis at the American Council on Education, Educational Policy, and Journal of Student Financial Aid.

Recognized in July 2005 by the Chronicle of Higher Education as one of the "New Voices" in higher education, Long has received numerous awards and recognitions including the National Academy of Education/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship for 2002-2004 and the Robert P. Huff Golden Quill Award for excellence in research and published works on student financial assistance in 2008.
