Schwartz Named HGSE's Next Academic Dean

Robert SchwartzDean Kathleen McCartney has announced that Professor of Practice Robert Schwartz will serve as the next academic dean at HGSE.

"I'm honored to be asked to be part of Kathy's leadership team," Schwartz said. "This is an exciting period in the life of the Ed school with the prospect of a new academic plan being developed and moving into high gear for an eventual Allston [campus] move."

Schwartz will begin working as academic dean on July 1.

"Bob Schwartz is one of the most respected national leaders in the field of education policy, and he has devoted his career to the improvement of education for children," McCartney said. "In many ways we have complementary skill sets, which will serve the school well. Bob and I are both thrilled to be entering into this partnership."

Schwartz, also codirector of the Education Policy and Management Program, joined the HGSE faculty in 1996.

Before coming to HGSE, Schwartz was the founding president of Achieve, an organization that provides assistance to states on standards, assessments, and accountability issues. He also worked as program director for education at the Pew Charitable Trusts, assistant director of the National Institute of Education, special assistant to the president of the University of Massachusetts, and special assistant to the Governor for Educational Affairs in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Schwartz also has been a high school English teacher and principal.
