García joined HGSE in June 2021 as the inaugural Senior Instructional Coach for Anti-Racist Pedagogy in the Teaching and Learning Lab, as part of the Anti-Racist Teaching and Advising (ARTA) initiative that began in 2020 to bolster the institution’s work in supporting faculty to create thriving learning and advising spaces for all students. In October, she was promoted to Associate Director for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), with a specific focus on staff and faculty development. García has more than 20 years of experience working on structural change and DEI initiatives in higher education. Prior to joining HGSE, she worked as Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer and as Associate Provost for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and for Faculty Development at small liberal arts colleges, where she also served as a tenured professor of English. Her professional and training work is on inclusive anti-racist practices that interrupt bias in and outside the classroom. Her scholarly and teaching work has focused on the Gothic, nineteenth-century U.S. multi-ethnic literature, journalism, and decolonial transamerican approaches to teaching literature. She holds a bachelor’s degree in History and Literature of Latin America from Harvard, a master’s in Education (Administration, Planning and Social Policy) from HGSE, and a master’s and Ph.D. in English from The Ohio State University.
