Part-Time Study

Is it possible to apply to HGSE for part-time study?

The degree programs at HGSE are designed to be completed on a full-time basis. However, a limited number of master's students are admitted to HGSE as part-time. Applicants must include a brief statement in the Program Information section of their application indicating why they are requesting part-time study.

Full-time enrollment is required in the following programs:

  • Doctor of Education Leadership
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Education
  • Language and Literacy: Reading Specialist strand
  • School Leadership
  • Teacher Education
  • Certificate of Advanced Study in Counseling

How is a part-time student defined?

All of our master's programs are designed to be completed within one year. A part-time student is anyone who would take more than one year to complete their degree, regardless of how many classes or courses the students takes in a given semester.

If I am accepted as a part-time student, how long do I have to complete my degree?

Part-time master's students must complete all degree requirements within three academic years of their enrollment.

Harvard employees who have completed prior HGSE courses as part of their TAP benefits may elect to apply up to two courses towards their degree. Each course subtracts one semester from the three year time-to-degree requirement. Additionally, previous courses must have been taken within three years of matriculation.

Can I still receive financial aid as a part-time student?

Yes, part-time students are eligible for financial aid. Further instructions can be found on the Financial Aid Office's website.
