How to Reapply

Please note: the information below refers to the HGSE application for enrollment in the Ed.L.D., Ed.M., and C.A.S. programs.

Applications for the Ph.D. in Education must be submitted through the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. For information about the Ph.D. application, please visit the GSAS Application Instructions and Information, as well as the HGSE How to Apply and Ph.D. FAQ pages.

How many times can I apply to HGSE?

The Harvard Graduate School of Education will accept a maximum of three applications from one individual over the course of his or her lifetime.

If I am reapplying, which materials do I need to resubmit?

You are eligible to reapply for the 2018-2019 academic year without resubmitting all supporting documents if one or both of your previous applications were for the 2015-2016, 2016-2017, or 2017-2018 academic years. In these cases, the requirements are as follows:

  • Online application form (Note that you must start a new application.)
  • $85 application fee (paid via credit card when you are ready to submit the online application)
  • New or updated Statement of Purpose
  • Updated resume/curriculum vitae
  • At least one new letter(s) of recommendation, updated from a previous recommender or a new letter from a new referee* (Note that you may still submit up to a maximum of three letters.)
  • New response to Short Essay Question (for Ed.L.D. reapplicants only)

*If you are a reapplicant applying to a program that is different from your prior application(s), we encourage you to submit three new/updated letters of recommendation. It is helpful to the admissions committee when recommenders comment specifically on the applicant’s abilities as they relate to the program in question.

Please note: unofficial transcripts do not need to be resubmitted for the application process unless new courses were taken or a new degree program was completed.

GRE scores (or GMAT scores, if applicable) only need to be resubmitted if the score report is from a test administered before February 1, 2013. If applicable, TOEFL scores only need to be resubmitted if the score report is from a test administered before February 1, 2016.

If you applied for any academic year prior to 2015-2016, you must resubmit all of your supporting documents when you reapply.

Current HGSE Students and HGSE Alumni

Currently registered HGSE degree candidates and HGSE alumni who applied for admission for 2015-2016, 2016-2017, or 2017-2018 may follow the "Reapplication Procedures" outlined above. Alumni and current students are advised, however, to obtain a minimum of two new letters of recommendation.

HGSE alumni who graduated before 2016 must submit a new application and all supporting documents, with the exception of the HGSE transcript – the Admissions Office will obtain this document on your behalf. Additionally, it is not necessary to resubmit applicable test scores unless they have expired.

Non-degree HGSE students must submit an application and all supporting documents, including their HGSE transcript.
