What do you most want incoming students to know or understand about the Ed School?

Students from other countries – like all students – should know that they are great assets to the school in general and to other students in particular. Again and again we hear students saying that, yes, they learned a lot from professors and from books, but that they learned at least as much, if not more, from other students. The diversity of backgrounds contributes enormously to this phenomenon, and the international students’ perspectives make up one of these very important elements.

Secondly – students should ASK QUESTIONS when in doubt and remember that their requests are never too much trouble for me or my graduate assistants to answer!

What are some of the services you provide?

My job is to help students and scholars integrate into the HGSE community so that they can maximize their experience here and so that they can, in turn, contribute not just in class but also in other aspects of campus life – through cultural organizations and events, arranging for visiting lecturers, presenting their research on campus, appearing in newsletters, and so on.

What are some of the “best-kept secrets” about the services you provide?

An opportunity we offer students that increasing numbers are taking advantage of is VIEWS. VIEWS is an interactive Web site where students can link with each other, with job postings, linked Web resources, and the chance to submit student research papers for publication online.

What are some of your most important events for students throughout the year? How can students become involved in these events?

Two events attract the most students. First, the annual Multicultural Festival at the end of the first semester, offers the whole school the chance to perform or cook or exhibit elements of his or her culture. This is a great party! All international students receive e-mails inviting them to participate and to attend. Anyone wanting to help with the organization is welcome to e-mail me right away.

Second, the annual HGSE Student Research Conference and International Forum takes place near the end of February and offers all students the chance to present some aspect of their research or prior work. International students are especially urged to get involved in the planning as it is a sure way to the heart of the School, the Conference being school-wide and central to the mission of the School. E-mails will go out inviting participation at all levels. Students can also e-mail me about this.

What are some of the ways in which international students are assisted in becoming part of the HGSE community?

We make every effort to connect students with others who have an interest in a particular part of the world. International students and scholars come from other countries; U.S. students have often lived and worked or studied in those countries. We circulate information so these people can find each other.
