About the Office of Student Affairs

The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) is comprised of the main office and several components. These component parts are the Office of Student Affairs: Access and Disability Services, the Office of Student Affairs: International Affairs, and the Office of Student Affairs: Multicultural Affairs, located in G-05 and 101, on the ground and first floors of Larsen Hall, respectively. The Larsen Hall location is also the home of the OSA Director and Student Support Services.

The OSA seeks to enhance the quality of life for students within the HGSE community. By providing a variety of support services, OSA assists students in meeting the many demands of their personal and academic lives. We collaborate with and support the efforts of students in developing programs that enhance the student experience and create a sense of community. To that end, the office works closely with the Student Government Association (SGA), student organizations and HGSE administrative offices and academic departments to coordinate and plan events such as Orientation, a Multicultural Festival, Commencement week, student socials, and other community building events. We also work with teams of students to implement the Student Research Conference and International Forum and the Alumni of Color Conference.

OSA Responses to Students' Frequently Asked Questions

What do you most want incoming students to know or understand about the services you offer?

The Office of Student Affairs exists because students do! Not only do we plan major events for the school like orientation and commencement, but we also help students get the most out of their time here through event planning, advocacy, and general support. We are here to help in any way we can!

What are some of the services OSA provides?

OSA is responsible for supporting all aspects of student life at HGSE. Although the activities we plan are largely extra-curricular, we also plan events that facilitate students' academic success. Among the extra-curricular activities, OSA supports the student government association, facilitating elections in the fall. We also work with students who want to begin or continue student organizations. We administer the Dean's Diversity Innovation Fund to support projects that increase the HGSE community's understanding of our increasingly diverse world, and we facilitate accommodations for disabled students. In addition, we sponsor a series of lectures and social events throughout the year, in order to facilitate a strong student community, and we offer a discounted T-Pass program to students.

Among the curricular activities, OSA works with the Student Governement Association to co-sponsor a Conversation Series on academic and research topics. In addition, we help facilitate two major research conferences that are largely run by students. The annual Alumni of Color Conference (AOCC) brings alumni back to present research to each other and to students. The Student Research Conference and International Forum (SRC), one of the largest student research opportunities anywhere, is designed for students to present to each other. All students are invited to present their work, and students from across Harvard and from other universities participate. We also sponsor various workshops on things like reading strategies, and other topics that will facilitate academic success.

What are some of the best-kept secrets about the services you provide?

We can help students find answers to virtually any question they may have about HGSE or the larger Harvard community. We can also serve as an advocate for students, should they need such help. We also keep a candy jar full in our Larsen office, just in case you need an extra boost through the day!

What are some of the most important events for students throughout the year?

OSA sponsors events that help students get to know each other and the Harvard community. As an example, in the fall, our office sponsors the annual HGSE multicultural festival. OSA also encourages student participation in the SRC and the AOCC, described above. In addition we sponsor annual events that help you escape the pressures of academic life. Past events have included trips to the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre, Boston Duck Tours, and outings to Red Sox games. In all of these efforts we hope to build community and facilitate your academic success! And we're always available for consultation and suggestions.

What Students Say about the Office of Student Affairs

"OSA is incredible. They know everything that is going on at HGSE."
-Ed.M. student

"OSA can put you in touch with people with the same interests as you."
-Ed.M. student

"Ordering public transportation passes through OSA was very convenient. You just sign up ahead of time. It's much more convenient than trying to go to a T Station because they only sell passes the first three days of each month. I really appreciated this service from OSA."
-Ed.D. student

"OSA offers doctoral students discussion groups about the doctoral process: things like picking your committee, thinking about your research, finding out what a QPP is, and how to balance your life with school. This series of discussion groups was really helpful. Even though I could not make it to all of the discussions, OSA provided transcripts of the meetings, which was very helpful."
-Ed.D. student
