Mary Frazier-Davis,
Acting Director of the Career Services Office
What do you most want incoming students
to know or understand about the services you offer?
First and foremost, I want students to realize that the office is here as a partner in your efforts to define, refine and take charge of your career aspirations. While we are here to support you, a proactive approach in the planning and execution of your individual career development will certainly help you achieve your personal contract for success. In addition to the resources mentioned above, you are encouraged to investigate the CSO web site as a source for career tools, job listings, our online recruiting and career management system through eRecruiting, and the Alumni Network through Harvard's Professional Connections site on post.harvard.
What are some of the best kept
secrets about the services you provide?
While a number of students take advantage of connecting with alumni via our online Alumni Advising System, I am always surprised that the number is not even larger. Our recently retooled service, Professional Connections, is a robust online career networking service available to students and alumni interested in learning more about specific career options from Harvard alumni willing to share their professional experiences and expertise. The power of building relationships via "networking" cannot be overestimated as a tool for exploring your options and informing your job search strategy.
Why is it important for students to make contact
with the Office of Career Services early in the year?
The primary reason for master's students is that the academic year goes by quickly, so deferring all career development activity to second semester is not necessarily in your best interest. In addition, many of the programs and events we sponsor are held but once a year. Some, like the San Francisco, Washington, D.C. and New York City "Career Days" programs, are limited to current students. If not taken advantage of during the current academic year, students have missed out on a unique and valuable program.
What are some of the most popular events you offer
during the year?
As mentioned above, the Career Days events are some of our most popular programs. Each excursion is an opportunity for current HGSE students to visit with alumni at a variety of work settings in the respective cities. San Francisco and New York are held in January and D.C. is during the March vacation break. These multiday events provide students the opportunity to deepen their understanding of career paths, opportunities and organizational cultures from the workplace meetings and honest, insider perspectives.
Could you speak about the variety of employers
that utilize your services in search of HGSE graduates?
The majority of employers who recruit through the on-campus recruiting program are school districts, charter schools, independent schools, and independent schools placement agencies. That only tells part of the story, however, as a wide range of non-profits, social science research organizations, colleges and universities, and other education-related employers list jobs for HGSE graduates in our eRecruiting system. We also provide students and employers opportunities to make professional connections through our Career Fairs and career programming events.
