The Study of New Scholars grew out of the Project on Faculty Appointments, a project that addressed the intense pressures to reinvent academic careers, reformulate academic appointments, and broaden the spectrum of employment arrangements. The work of the 5-year project included:

developing a national resource for academic policies and data on the implementation of these policies;

conducting policy-oriented research that illuminated pivotal areas of policy and practice;

providing decision-makers with the necessary information to discuss, design, and implement policy changes mutually beneficial to faculties and institutions.
