The MUVEES simulation is situated in the fictitious town of River City. In the course of the production of New River City, the environment pictured here is continuously evolving into a more detailed and texturally appealing environment.

Initially, avatars arrive in a large reception area. Team organization and dialogue about their journeys takes place in this neutral area.
Here in New River City, one's avatar can view the river for which the city was named. In the distance are the mines, railroad station and some homes.
The railroad station and the mine on the mountainside depict how industrialization has contributed to the city's growth.
The view upstream shows the falls. This water flows from the mountains near the abandoned mines from the city's inception. Also visible in the distance is a recreational overlook.
Crowded into the large tenement buildings are the majority of the city's workforce.
One of many historical photographs inside the hospital is a crowded waiting room full of patients waiting to be seen by a doctor.
The university also houses historical photographs showing students working in the laboratory and well-known scientists such as Ellen Swallow Richards.
Throughout River City, computer-based "agents" disclose information and indirect clues about what is going on in the city. The phrases “spoken” by these agents evolve over time.
Data collection stations provide detailed information about water samples at various spots in River City.
Kiosks in River City provide places where people can post news items and see maps of the city.
