When are decisions mailed?

Decisions for doctoral applications are mailed by March 15, 2006. All other decisions are mailed by April 1, 2006.

What is the application fee?

With the online application, you must pay the fee using a major credit card. If you apply using the paper or downloadable version, your application must be accompanied by a check or money order for $75 payable to Harvard University. If the check is signed by someone other than the applicant, the applicant's name should be printed in the upper left-hand corner of the check. The application fee is nonrefundable.

Do you offer fee waivers?

Written fee waiver requests will be considered if they are accompanied by documentation of need. Please note that fee waivers are subject to approval by the Admissions Office. However, to use the online application, you must provisionally submit your application fee. Should a waiver be granted, the fee will be refunded.

Can I include a resume with my application?

Although you may submit a resume, you should not complete any section by referring the A dmissions Committee to an enclosed resume or vitae or other portions of the application. You must complete all sections of the application form.

Do you prefer the downloadable application, the paper application or the online application?

The online application is the preferred way to submit your application.

What are the application requirements for 2006-2007?

A completed application to a Doctoral, Master's, or Graduate Study Only program consists of the following:

  • Application Form
  • $75 Application Fee
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Three Letters of Recommendation
  • Official Transcript(s) from each Postsecondary Institution Attended
  • Standardized Test Score(s)

What is the Statement of Purpose?

The admissions committee will read your statement with great care. Your statement should be written by you alone and represent your original work. The statement should be typed, double-spaced, and no more than 1,500 words. Be sure to include your name, program and degree on each page. In your statement, please discuss:

  1. Your background: how your experiences (education, work, volunteer, and/or personal) have prepared you for graduate study;
  2. Your objectives for graduate study: your career goals, possible faculty mentors, and (for doctoral students) the initial research interests that you have;
  3. Your decision to apply to HGSE: why you think there is a good fit between your objectives and our program.

Several programs have additional requirements. Please see the application instructions for the specifics.

What are the test requirements?

GRE
All applicants are required to take the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Scores must be from a test administered after October 1, 2002. If, however, you took the General Test between February 1, 2001 and September 30, 2002 AND you took the standalone GRE Writing Assessment between February 1, 2001 and December 31, 2002, you may submit the results to these two tests to satisfy the GRE requirement. (Please enter these two scores separately in the GRE Scores section.)

We strongly recommend taking the GRE no later than December 10, 2005 in order for the scores to reach the Admissions Office by the application deadlines.

TOEFL
In addition to the above requirements, all applicants whose native language is not English or whose baccalaureate is not from a college or university where English is the language of instruction are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and, if taking the paper-based test, the Test of Written English (TWE). HGSE seeks applicants with scores of at least 100 TOEFL on the Internet-based test, 250 TOEFL and 5 essay rating on the computer-based test, or 600 TOEFL and 5 TWE on the paper-based test. Scores must be from a test administered no earlier than February 1, 2004.

Please note: Completion of graduate-level degrees at an institution where the instruction is conducted in English does not exempt an applicant from the TOEFL requirement.

Be sure that you request the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send the official test results to HGSE and that you take the test(s) in time for the scores to be received in the HGSE Admissions Office by the application deadline.

The Harvard Graduate School of Education does not waive test requirements.

What is your ETS Institution Code

The ETS Institution Code for the Harvard Graduate School of Education is 3428

When should I take the GRE in order for the scores to reach HGSE in time?

Applicants should arrange to take the GRE as soon as possible. We recommend taking the exam no later than December 10, 2005 to ensure that the scores arrive to our office by the deadlines.

If I am a currently registered student at HGSE or an alumna of the school, do I need to submit a new application?

Currently registered Ed.D., Ed.M., or C.A.S. students at HGSE must submit a new application and all supporting documents. At the applicant's request, the Admissions Office will move forward from the Registration Office all transcripts (including the current HGSE transcript) and/or applicable test scores. Please refer to the test information section for current test requirements.

Former Ed.D., Ed.M., or C.A.S. students at HGSE must submit a new application and all required supporting documents except for their HGSE transcript, which the Admissions Office will move forward from the Registration Office.

Nondegree HGSE students must submit a new application and all supporting documents, including their HGSE transcript.

Do I need to submit a new application if I was a previous applicant?

If you are a previous applicants who was not admitted or you were admitted but did not register, you must submit a new 2006-2007 application and all supporting documents since all prior application materials will have been discarded by the Admissions Office. Some admissions requirements may have changed since you first submitted an application.

May I apply for part-time study?

Yes, a limited number of students may enroll at HGSE in a Master's program on a part-time basis. Full-time enrollment in the Ed.D.program is required. Criteria for granting part-time study include child-care responsibilities, work related to study, health, and financial need. Applicants must include a brief statement with their application indicating why they are requesting part-time study. If an admitted student's circumstances change, he or she may petition the Admissions Office in writing for a change in status.

How do I apply for year-in-advance admission?

Applicants who need to arrange well in advance for a shift of professional responsibility or to develop personal funding strategies may apply for 2007-2008 admission. Applicants must submit all application materials by January 3, 2006 and include a statement indicating why they are requesting year-in-advance admission.

Can I defer admission to the Harvard Graduate School of Education?

If an admitted student's circumstances change, he or she may petition the Admissions Committee in writing for a one-year deferment. Please note that deferments are rarely granted and are subject to the committee's approval. Admitted applicants who accept an offer of admission are expected to enroll in the term for which they applied and were admitted.

Can I transfer credit from another institution to HGSE?

We do not accept transfer credit from other institutions. Students who have taken courses at HGSE before matriculating into a degree program may transfer up to 2 courses to their degree program.

Are admissions decisions ever reconsidered by the Admissions Committee?

Admissions decisions are rarely reconsidered for the year in which the decision was made and only when substantial new evidence that could not have been available at the time of the original decision is presented. Requests for reconsideration, together with substantial new evidence, should be addressed, in writing, to the Director of Admissions within one month of the date of your letter of notification.

Are there additional requirements for international students?

International applicants must submit all application materials outlined in the general instructions. All materials must be submitted in English, and applicants must verify any translations by including the original and a certified copy of the original.

Once students have been admitted as degree candidates, Harvard University requires international students who need a Harvard-sponsored student visa to submit financial certification that demonstrates adequate funding for one year of study. Detailed instructions regarding this process will be available upon admission to HGSE. Please note that admitted international students requesting J-1 or F-1 visas are required to enroll full-time.

Can I change programs after I've applied?

Once a student is admitted into a program of study, transfer from one program to another is rarely permitted. Students may consult with the Office of the Committee on Degrees , 122 Longfellow Hall, for details related to program change. Only those admitted to the Midcareer Math and Science and the Teaching and Curriculum programs at the time of acceptance may pursue certification through them.

May I submit other papers, samples of work, or portfolios to the Admissions committee for review?

You may submit additional materials to the Office of Admissions, but the Admissions committee may or may not choose to evaluate such items since they are not required for admissions. Large items are especially discouraged. All materials become property of HGSE and will not be returned.
