- Richard Murnane Named Acting HGSE Dean | May 9, 2013
- Richard J. Murnane, the Juliana W. and William Foss Thompson Professor of Education and Society at HGSE, will serve as acting dean, President Drew Faust announced today. Murnane will take up the post on July 1, when Dean Kathleen McCartney leaves Harvard to become president of Smith College, and will serve until the HGSE’s new dean is appointed and in place.

- Ninety-five library leaders from around the globe gathered on the HGSE campus last Thursday to discuss the future of the 21st century library. Developed by Harvard Institutes for Higher Education Senior Director, Joseph Zolner, American Library Association President, Maureen Sullivan, and Tufts University President Emeritus, Lawrence Bacow, Library Leadership in a Digital Age brought together faculty experts, policy makers and public and higher education library leaders to discuss the current state and future direction of the profession.

- HIHE Congratulates MDP and MLE Faculty Member Carlos Cortes | February 27, 2013
- The Harvard Institutes for Higher Education congratulates UC Riverside professor emeritus, Carlos Cortes, on being the first recipient of the “Council Award” presented bythe World Affairs Council of Inland Southern California.
- Cortes is being recognized for his work on multiculturalism and intercultural communication both nationally and internationally. Cortes serves on the faculties of the Harvard Institutes for Higher Education, the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication and the Federal Executive Institute. He is recognized throughout the United States and in other countries for his work on multiculturalism and intercultural communication.

- Fixing Schools is Focus of Newest Kauffman Video Sketchbook
- Katherine Merseth, Senior Lecturer on Education and Director of the Teacher Education Program at HGSE, takes on the vexing issue of school reform and advises schools to stay true to the mission of purposeful learning in the newest installment of the Kauffman Sketchbook series, "Fixing Schools".
- The Kauffman Sketchbook series launched in September 2011 and features videos of influential leaders in education and entrepreneurship. In the video, Merseth implores communities, school leaders and teachers to focus on one thing —providing students a purposeful place for learning. "If we don't teach the children to be literate, to read, to write, to compute, to be able to use a computer, who else will?" she emphasizes.

- The Principals’ Center at the Harvard Graduate School of Education is pleased to announce it is now accepting applications for its summer premiere series of leadership development programs designed for K-12 leaders, taking place summer 2012. All programs feature discussions with HGSE faculty and experts in the field, (small group breakout sessions, and the ability for attendees to leave with an action plan fleshed out specifically for their institution.) Each program aims to reach a particular audience offering distinct curriculums discussing strategies relevant to attendees at different stages of their professional careers. Whether you're just getting started and finding your way, honing a well-developed mission, or trying to scale efforts that have proven successful, there is a program that is built to support you and your districts goals.

- Professional Development Programs Focus on Teacher Development
- Cambridge, MA, March 26, 2012—Programs in Professional Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, known for its leadership development programs tailored to K–12 educators, announced three new programs designed specifically for teachers. Teachers—the main connection to schools for many students and parents—play a pivotal role in promoting academic achievement as well as holistic growth. Teacher Teams will build strategies for teachers to leverage peer expertise and collaborate with principals to reach common goals. Enhancing Teacher Effectiveness in High Schools will hone in on the theories, knowledge and practices that bolster teacher effectiveness. The Arts and Passion-Driven Learning aims to examine the power of the arts in education as a channel to facilitate learning in all subjects. All programs take place on the HGSE campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

- Arts in Education: HGSE, Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Project
- In late April, President Obama announced an unprecedented initiative that places the federal government at the center of the conversation on the role of arts in education. The Turnaround Arts Initiative is aimed at eight struggling middle and elementary schools across the country, giving them $14.7 million collectively to incorporate music, dance and theater into their curricula over the course of three years.
- In the midst of the national conversation about arts in education, Programs in Professional Education at HGSE is offering a new professional development program in partnership with the Silk Road Project. The Arts and Passion-Driven Learning will focus on how the arts can both engage students’ interests and help them develop essentials skills and understandings. This unique program opens with a plenary session with world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and a concert by the Silk Road Ensemble.

- Dede Receives AECT Distinguished Development Award
- Professor Christopher Dede recently received the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) Distinguished Development Award. Dede’s research focuses on the expanded human capabilities for knowledge creation, sharing, and mastery that emerging technologies enable. His teaching models the use of information technology to distribute and orchestrate learning across space, time, and multiple interactive media. His research spans emerging technologies for learning, infusing technology into large-scale educational improvement initiatives, policy formulation and analysis, and leadership in educational innovation.

- Harvard Institute for School Leadership Faculty Member Robert Peterkin Releases New Book on District Wide Change
- The newly released book, Every Child, Every Classroom, Every Day: School Leaders Who Are Making Equity a Reality, edited by HGSE Professor Deborah Jewell Sherman and Professor Emeritus Robert Peterkin, features case studies on urban school districts where efficient change has been made to promote student achievement. From Seattle to Richmond to Baltimore, these districts have implemented strategies revolutionizing a range of areas including community engagement, instructional improvement and realigning resources.
- The 2011 session of the Harvard Institute for School Leadership will focus on case studies from this new book. During the Institute, teams will work directly with the leaders from the case study districts to craft blueprints for their own districts.

- Harvard Institute for School Leadership Focuses on Developing Tailored Blueprints for Districts
- An effective theory of action stems from the diverse perspectives provided by different members of a district team. The Harvard Institute for School Leadership enables teams to attend together and collaboratively engineer a strategic plan for their districts moving forward.

- Howard Gardner to speak at the Connecting the Mind, Brain & Education institute, June 20-24
- Howard Gardner, Professor of Cognition & Education at HGSE, will lead a session on multiple intelligences as it relates to the work of MBE during the Connecting the Mind, Brain and Education institute taking place June 20-24 at Harvard. The institute is a week-long professional development program for both higher education and K-12 administrators.
- Participants will gain a firm understanding of the links between cognitive science, neuroscience and educational practice and apply current research to challenges in their teaching, research and curriculum development.

- Harvard Graduate School of Education's Programs in Professional Education won three awards this year from the University Continuing Education Association (UCEA) for its new marketing campaigns: a bronze award in "Interactive Marketing: E-communication" for its e-mail campaigns, a silver award in "Print Advertising, 1 or 2 colors," for its "Join our Community of Learners" newspaper ad, and a gold award in the category "Campaign: Print" for its new print brochures. The UCEA seeks to advance university professional and continuing education.
