1992

Donald Farish, President of Rowan University (NJ), has announced his retirement, effective June 30, 2011.

Theodore (Ted) Long, President of Elizabethtown College (PA), has announced his retirement, effective in July 2011.

Don Meyer is President of Valley Forge Christian College (PA).

Shirley Robinson Pippins is Senior Vice President for Programs and Services at the American Council on Education (ACE) in Washington, DC.

1993

Mark Edelstein, President of Lakes Region Community College (NH), has announced his retirement, effective in July 2011.

1996

Dick Miksad is Dean Emeritus and Thomas M. Linville Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Virginia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science.

1997

Kevin Appleton is now Vice President for Finance and Business Affairs and Chief Financial Officer for the Southern University and A&M College System (LA).

Dale Knobel, President of Denison University (OH), has announced his retirement, effective at the end of the 2012-2013 academic year.

1998

Ellen Hazelkorn, Director of Research and Enterprise, Dean of the Graduate Research School, and Head of the Higher Education Policy Research Unit at Dublin Institute of Technology (Ireland), has completed a book titled Rankings and the Reshaping of Higher Education: The Battle for World-Class Excellence that will be published by Palgrave MacMillan in March 2011.  Based on original international surveys and interviews, the book is the first major international study of institutional rankings.

2003

Kent Brands, Vice President of Augustana College (IL), contributed a piece to the “Views” section of the November 15, 2010 issue of Inside Higher Ed titled “Souls for Sale.”  The article shared Kent’s sense of current higher education marketing activities, particularly as they apply to the college search and admission process, and suggested some new ground rules that reflect current realities associated with institutional marketing activities.

2006

Toi Carter is Associate General Counsel at George Washington University (DC).

Susan Herbst, Chief Academic Officer for the University System of Georgia and Professor of Public Policy at Georgia Institute of Technology, has been appointed President of the University of Connecticut.  She is the first woman selected as UConn’s chief executive and will begin her term in July 2011.  Susan also wrote a piece titled “The Climate Is In Your Head” that appeared in the “Views” section of the December 10, 2010 issue of Inside Higher Ed.  The article shared her reflections on current campus efforts to promote diversity and identified challenges that lie ahead in this area of institutional leadership.

Anton Muscatelli is Principal and Vice Chancellor at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, his alma mater.

Glenn Sharfman, Vice President and Dean for Academic Affairs at Manchester College (IN), contributed a piece to the “Views” section of the December 16, 2010 issue of Inside Higher Ed titled “What’s High School For?”  Noting an increase in dual enrollment activity (students taking courses in high school for both high school and college credit), the article makes several cautionary points about this phenomenon.

2007

Sara (Gallagher) Campbell has been promoted to the position of Senior Vice President of Operations and Chief Operating Officer at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (PA).

After serving for almost ten years as Vice President of Instruction, Regina Stanback Stroud has been appointed President of Skyline College (CA).

Nancy Uscher has been named President of the Cornish College of the Arts (WA), effective August 1, 2011.

2008

Lane Glenn, Vice President of Academic Affairs at Northern Essex Community College (MA), has been appointed President of the institution.

Robert Gunsalus is now Vice President for University Relations at Santa Clara University (CA).

Marcus Lingenfelter is Director of State Government Relations for the Middle States and New England Regions at the College Board.

TC Westcott is now Vice President for Finance and Administration and Treasurer at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art (NY).

2010

Allan Bell is Director of Library Digital Initiatives at the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre at the University of British Columbia (Canada).

Joe Mullarkey’s institution (Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills, Illinois) received the ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries Award for Community College Libraries in 2009.  Their submission can be viewed at http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/acrl/awards/excellenceacademic.cfm.

Algeania Freeman, President of Martin University (IN), retired from the presidency on December 31, 2010.

1989

Gerard Buckley has been named President of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NY).

2001

Cindy Pollard is Associate Vice President for Strategic Communications and Media Spokesperson for the University of Missouri System.

Bruce Romanish is Professor of Education at Washington State University – Vancouver.

2004

Rich Bundy has been appointed Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations at the University of Vermont.  In this role, he will serve as the inaugural CEO of the newly-established University of Vermont Foundation.

2005

Kirk Pillow has been appointed Provost at the University of the Arts (PA).

2007

Don Erwin has been promoted to the position of Chief Information Officer at Buffalo State College (NY).

Chuck Sands is now the Founding Dean of the College of Allied Health at California Baptist University.

2008

Sally Mercer has been promoted to Associate Vice President of Human Resources at Saint Mary’s College of Maryland.

Kevin Ralph is now serving as chief development officer at the Matheny Medical and Educational Center in Peapack, New Jersey.

2009

Denise Ciccarelli has been named Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations at the College of Charleston (SC).

2010

David Dausey has accepted a tenured faculty position at Mercyhurst College (PA), effective at the start of the 2011-2012 academic year.

Jeff Katz has been named Dean of the Gordon Ford College of Business at Western Kentucky University.  His appointment begins in June 2011.

David Stone is now Associate Vice President for Research at Northern Illinois University.

Zelema Harris, Chancellor of Saint Louis Community College, has announced her retirement, effective June 30, 2011.

1993

Judith Kornberg has been named Dean of the School of Professional Studies at Berkeley College (NJ).

2000

A. Gabriel Esteban, Interim President of Seton Hall University (NJ), has been appointed to the job on a permanent basis.

2004

Marisa Kelly has been named Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Ithaca College (NY).

2005

Jack Thomas, Provost and Academic Vice President at Western Illinois University, has been appointed President of the institution.

2007

Jonathan Peri, Vice President and General Counsel at Neumann University (PA), has been appointed to the Pennsylvania State Board of Education by Governor Edward G. Rendell.

2009

Mike Hill is now Director of Programming at Saint Thomas University (Canada).

Guiyou Huang is now Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty at Norwich University (VT).

Wolfgang Natter is now Dean of Arts and Sciences at Saint Bonaventure University (NY).

2010

Marilyn Levine is now Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Life at Central Washington University.

Brian Shaw is Dean of the School of Science and Technology Intelligence at the National Defense Intelligence College (DC).

Afzal Suleman is now Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Victoria (Canada).

New Presidents

1992

Susan Resneck Pierce, President Emerita of the University of Puget Sound (WA), President of SRP Consulting, and Senior Consultant at Academic Search, contributed a piece to the “Career Advice” section of the January 26, 2011 issue of Inside Higher Ed titled “Producing Academic Leaders.”  The article described what some have characterized as an impending crisis in the number of individuals interested in becoming presidents and chief academic officers, and provided suggestions about what colleges and universities can do to prepare talented faculty members to become successful administrators.

1994

Diana Chapman Walsh, the now-retired President of Wellesley College (MA), contributed a piece to the “Views” section of the February 14, 2011 issue of Inside Higher Ed titled “Toward a Science of Learning.”  The article discussed how institutions might direct their research energies and expertise on the growing learning outcomes assessment movement (to, as Diana put it, enhance higher education’s ability to “learn about learning”).

1997

1999

James Bundschuh, President of Marymount University (VA), has announced his retirement, effective June 30, 2011.

Carole Berotte Joseph, President of Massachusetts Bay Community College has been appointed President of Bronx Community College (NY).

Betsy Vogel-Boze, Campus Dean and Chief Executive Officer of Kent State University’s Stark Campus, has been appointed President of the College of the Bahamas.

Charles Welch, President of Henderson State University (AR), has been named President of the Arkansas State University system.  Prior to Chuck’s appointment, Robert Potts (New Presidents ’91) had been serving as Interim President.

2006

Ralph Hexter, President of Hampshire College (MA) and former Executive Dean at the University of California, Berkeley, has been named Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor at the University of California, Davis.  His new appointment was effective on January 1, 2011.

Mitchell Thomashow, President of Unity College (ME), has resigned effective July 1, 2011.

2007

Thomas Ross, President of Davidson College (NC), has been named President of the 17-campus University of North Carolina system.

2008

Thomas Rochon, President of Ithaca College (NY), contributed a piece to the “Commentary” section of the October 24, 2010 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education titled “The Dirty Business of the Undercover President.”  The article shared Tom’s experience and personal reflections about a three-day stint he spent last summer working with staff members from the campus facilities department.

Michael Sorrell, President of Paul Quinn College (TX), wrote an editorial titled “Reality Redefines Perception at Paul Quinn” that appeared in the December 28, 2010 edition of The Dallas Morning News.  The piece reported on several recent institutional accomplishments that have created a new perception of a college emerging from a challenging period and “transforming itself into something special.”

2009

Lori Bettison-Varga, President of Scripps College (CA), contributed a piece to the “Views” section of the January 11, 2011 issue of Inside Higher Ed titled “Gabrielle Giffords’ Message.”  Written in the immediate aftermath of the Gabrielle Giffords shooting in Arizona, the article shared President Bettison-Varga’s thoughts about the ramifications and implications of this heinous event.  Congresswoman Giffords is an alumnus of Scripps who delivered the 2009 Commencement Address at the college.
