Pierce Receives Chall Doctoral Student Research Award

Cambridge, MA -- March 15, 2006 -- The Jeanne S. Chall Doctoral Student Research Award was presented to Margaret Pierce, Ed. M.'98, Ed.D.'06, on Tuesday, March 7, at the second annual Jeanne S. Chall Lecture, "Words Worth Teaching and Where They Came From."

Pierce, a former teacher, has largely focused her work on children with reading difficulties. Her dissertation "Urban Children at Risk for Reading Failure: Investigating Profiles and Components of Reading Performance Among Dysfluent Readers" examines the heterogeneity among struggling readers in urban schools.

The award honors the late Jeanne S. Chall, who was a professor at HGSE and a leading expert in the field. Her seminal work on reading research and instruction influenced scholarship on the teaching of reading in schools and universities throughout the nation.
