On October 3, 2003, Warren Professor and HGSE dean Ellen Condliffe Lagemann delivered the keynote address at the ETS Invitational Conference. The conference, entitled "Measurement and Research Issues in a New Accountability Era," reviewed critical topics in educational assessment and evaluated possible future directions.

Dean Lagemann's talk, "Toward a More Adequate Science of Education," focused specifically on creating new standards of accountability for education research, new infrastructure for research, and new programs of research training—as a means of linking theory and practice in powerful ways.
