On January 23, 2003, HGSE dean Ellen Condliffe Lagemann addressed the annual meeting of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U). The conference, entitled "The Courage to Question: Liberal Education in the 21st Century," posed the question of the value of liberal education in the lives of students and in the character of institutions of higher education. Dean Lagemann's talk, "The Challenge of Liberal Education: Questioning the Past, Present, and Future," focused specifically on liberal education as a force that can ready students to participate in the defining issues of our time.
