Information on Donating Educational Supplies
  • The Louisiana Department of Education is accepting donations of supplies such as book bags, textbooks, school supplies and uniforms. You can also donate to the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund, operating through a non-profit foundation, which will carefully match personal monetary donations with the needs of Louisiana school systems. Visit www.doe.state.la.us/lde/misc/donate.html for more information.
  • Teach for America has co-sponsored a Do Something/Nickelodeon campaign called “We’ve Got Your Back.” The campaign asks individuals to send backpacks full of school supplies to school-aged children displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Hogg Middle School in Houston, Texas serves as the “hub” for the backpack drive. Backpacks are being accepted until 9-30-05. Visit www.dosomething.org/challenges/emergency/katrina/#wheretosend for more information.

  • Project Backpack was started by three sisters (ages 14, 11, and 8) in Bethesda, MD. In one month, the sisters have collected and sent over 25,000 backpacks to Gulf Coast children. Their ultimate goal: 50,000 backpacks to kids by 10/31/2005. Visit www.projectbackpack.org for more information.
  • The Texas Education Agency has created a hotline to take calls from teachers who would like to help students and schools impacted by Hurricane Katrina. The toll-free number is 1-866-435-7090. Individuals who wish to donate schools supplies to the evacuees may email information to: schoolsupplies@tea.state.tx.us

  • The United States Department of Education has developed a Web site that details needed materials from schools affected by Hurricane Katrina. The Web site lists needs such as school supplies, personal items, desks, chairs, computers, textbooks, curriculum materials, and counseling assistance. Visit www.ed.gov/news/hurricane/schools/ for more information.
