Educating Girls Globally

The global conversation around education — the access to and quality of — is of the utmost importance, says Irina Bokova, director-general of UNESCO. But what should not be overlooked is the "unfinished business," namely that, in terms of parity between the sexes, the world is failing. In fact, UNESCO estimates that poor girls in sub-Saharan Africa will not be enrolled in school before 2086 — 70 years from now.

"This is a situation we cannot accept," says Bokova. " It is not acceptable because it is not moral; it is not ethical. It is about the rights of millions of girls and women."

At the Ed School to participate in the Askwith Forum, Against the Odds: Educating Girls Globally, Bokova spoke to the Harvard EdCast about the global constraints faced by girls and women face in receiving an education and what UNESCO is doing to help.
