Why I Love Baltimore

When Professor Andres Alonso arrived in Baltimore in 2007 to become the CEO of Baltimore City Schools — a post he would go on to hold for six years — he was delighted to find a city open to him and his ideas. He found, he says, an “extraordinary readiness of people there to embrace … the difficult processes of change.” It is this quality that makes him so sure that the city that he loves will rebound from the recent civil unrest and riots that erupted following the death of Freddie Gray amid allegations of police brutality. Baltimore, says Alonso confidently, “will be a place that will emerge with new solutions.”

In this edition of the Harvard EdCast, Alonso speaks publicly for the first time about recent events in Baltimore, and examines their potential impact on schools and children.
