Yoshikawa to Be Nominated to the NBES

Hiro YoshikawaPresident Barack Obama recently announced his intent to nominate Professor Hiro Yoshikawa to the National Board of Education Sciences (NBES).

“I am honored to be nominated to the National Board on Education Sciences. As the field of education in the United States confronts changes -- in populations, forms, and contexts of learning -- the federal role in research of relevance to educational practice and policy remains a critical one,” Yoshikawa said. “I look forward to advising the Department of Education’s Institute on Educational Sciences over the next years through my membership on this board.”

Yoshikawa will join fellow HGSE Professor Bridget Terry Long, who was appointed to the board in 2010 and was recently named chair of the board, and Professor Judith Singer, whom the president has also announced his intent to nominate.

“Hiro will bring great wisdom and judgment to the NBES Board. He is a creative researcher who brings both qualitative and quantitative methods to bear on the most pressing problems in education today,” said Dean Kathleen McCartney.

The National Board of Education Sciences is a 15-member presidentially appointed advisory panel of the Institute of Education Sciences in the U.S. Department of Education. The board performs a host of duties, ranging from reviewing and approving the research priorities of the Institute to advising and consulting with the director on the policies of the Institute. The board also reviews and regularly evaluates the work of the Institute to ensure that its research, development, evaluation and statistical analyses are consistent with the standards set out in the Education Sciences Reform Act of 2002.
