Kathleen McCartney to Join Faculty at Harvard Graduate School of Education

Kathleen McCartney, an expert on early childhood development, will join the faculty of the Harvard Graduate School of Education as a full professor on July 1, 2000.

McCartney's research focuses on theoretical questions related to early childhood experience and development as well as social policy questions concerning regulable aspects of child-care. She has studied issues in child-care, early childhood intervention, parent-child attachment, behavior genetics theory, and social policy.

"Kathy's research on early childhood and child-care has been of great interest to educators across the country," says Jerome T. Murphy, HGSE Dean and Harold Howe II Professor of Education. "She will add new depth and breadth to HGSE's Human Development and Psychology department, and we're delighted to have her."

McCartney's research has been published in numerous academic journals including Child Development (2000, 1997), American Journal of Public Health (1999), Merrill-Palmer Quarterly (1997), and Psychological Bulletin (1990).

McCartney has been a fellow of the American Psychological Society since 1995. She has served as director of the University of New Hampshire Child Study & Development Center, as a visiting research scholar at Wellesley College, and as an editorial board member of Child Development.

At HGSE, McCartney will teach courses on early childhood development. She received her M.S. and Ph.D. from Yale University, and her B.S. from Tufts University, all in Psychology.
