Joel Klein, former chancellor of NYC schools and CEO of Amplify, visited the Ed School on October 1 as part of the Askwith Forum, “Educational Innovations for the Future.”

    I’m not sure what conclusion to draw. That there is no incentive to innovate in the public schools reflects a conservative tendency as the speaker says. It also reflects a desire for security. In business the profit motive is an incentive to innovation. In the public schools, the benefits of better education won’t be remunerative to the employees. It’s not clear to me though that innovation in the use of newer technology will bear much fruit. Old-fashioned math and science should be more useful. The difference can be in encouraging inquiry and thinking rather than rote learning. The role of the Amplify company isn’t clear to me from the interview. Another factor which was hardly if at all mentioned in the interview is that the schools are part of society and won’t by themselves make the difference when the students in them come from different backgrounds.
