Borrowing

Borrowing Regulations

Borrowers must present an appropriate ID to check out circulating and reserve materials. Borrowing privileges are extended to:

  • Students, faculty, staff and officers of Harvard University
  • Gutman Library Special Borrowers
  • Episcopal Divinity School students and faculty
  • Weston School of Theology students and faculty
  • Andover-Newton Theological Seminary students and faculty
  • Harvard Extension School degree candidates
  • Harvard Summer School students
  • Harvard Special Borrower card for a TA or RA

Library Materials that Circulate

The following materials circulate to borrowers with valid Harvard IDs:

  • Monographs and books with Library of Congress classification
  • HGSE theses
  • Microfilm/microfiche theses from other universities
  • Textbooks from the current textbook collection

Library Materials that Do NOT Circulate

The following materials are to be used in the library only:

  • Periodicals
  • Qualifying Papers
  • Special Collections items
  • Reference materials
  • Items in the stacks labeled "NON-CIRCULATING"
  • All microforms other than theses from other universities

Loan Period

Library materials circulate for four weeks. There is no limit on the number of materials that may be borrowed. Harvard faculty, officers, HUCTW staff, and HGSE doctoral candidates who have completed their QP proposal are entitled to extended loan privileges. Renewals

Materials may be renewed five times unless recalled by another user. Patrons with a Harvard ID and PIN may renew online in the HOLLIS Catalog by accessing "Your Account." Special Borrowers may renew books using our Special Borrower Renewal Request Form.

Recalling Materials

All library materials are subject to recall after circulating for 14 days if needed by another borrower, and are subject to immediate recall if needed for reserve.

Search Service

If an item is not found on the shelf, and it is not circulating, a request to have a staff member search for the item may be made at the Circulation Desk.
