History of Education and Teacher Training Schools (Educ classification)

This collection consists of materials on primary and secondary education and teacher training in the United States. The scope of the collection is from the mid-19th century to approximately 1950. Types of materials found in this collection include:

  • Records of American teacher training colleges and normal schools, from their inception in the 1830s to the mid-20th century, arranged by state, including prospectuses, curricula, and alumni registers (approx. 150 linear ft.)
  • Extensive pamphlet collections documenting the training and compensation of teachers, the teaching of individual subjects, the growth of kindergartens, adult education and self-improvement
  • Prospectuses of summer camps for boys and girls, 1880s-1940s
  • Materials on the education of ethnic and racial groups and of physically challenged students
  • Materials on the construction of school buildings and on hygiene in the schools
