Jared Bleak

Jared Bleak's dissertation, Integrated
or Insulated: The Governance of For-Profit Subsidiaries of Nonprofit Universities,
examined the governance of for-profit companies created by traditional
nonprofit institutions, focusing on the experiences of Duke Corporate
Education, NYUonline, Babson Interactive, and Columbia University's Fathom.
Jared's dissertation committee included Professors Richard Chait, chair,
James Honan, and Judith McLaughlin. Presently, Jared is a managing director
at Duke Corporate Education where he designs and delivers educational
programs that meet clients' strategic challenges. Prior to this position,
he worked in a postdoctoral research position with The Study of New Scholars
Project at HGSE. Jared is the author of When For-Profit Meets Nonprofit:
Educating Through the Market, published in 2005 by RoutledgeFalmer.
He has also written a chapter in Policies on Faculty Appointment:
Standard Practices and Unusual Arrangements, and is currently completing
a chapter, "Charging into
the Market: Governance Challenges Created by Commercial Activities,"
that will appear in an edited book to be published by the American Council
on Education.
